Reflection
Integrating technology into teaching and learning is critical for today's classroom teacher. As a 5th grade teacher, the Thinkature and iKeepBookmarks web sites are tools my students can use for collaboration, research, and inquiry. Most of my students don't have a lot of experience on the internet. The iKeepBookmarks site will allow me to focus my students on appropriate web sites, as well as guide them through the research process.

Survey

Survey Monkey would be a great way to administer tests. It's also a fun way to survey students on their knowledge at the beginning of a new unit, or even rating the stories read in a particular unit. Students can also be allowed to survey their class on fun topics such as: Spirit Week Activities, Movie Day Choices, or Food Choices for Class Parties!

Question:

The knowledge I've gained on integrating technology into the classroom is great! My question is how can I utilize these strategies when my school's technology resources are limited? We have computers in our classrooms and "lab" that work periodically. There are no support people to keep them in working condition. Teachers' efforts to make technology a part of our instructional practices are not supported.

Hi Shuron,
You are so right that teachers must first have a strong desire to make an impact on the lives of children. Those that choose education because of the summer vacations, nice work hours and job security may soon find themselves working a second job, taking work home, and getting a RIF notice! You have to love what you do and be made for it. Natural teachers are a wonder to watch and those that are just in it for the so-called perks are painful to behold. You are a natural!

Hi Shuron,

I'm also responding to your Courage to Teach Reflection. I absolutely agree that good teachers have to think outside the box. They must also develop confidence in experiementing and allowing themselves the opprortunity to "think outside the box". They really have to be fearless and confident in their own ability to teach. Without that confidence, they will be shut out by teachers that are afraid to change or those who fear to challenge themselves. You also talk about allowing time for reflection. Such an overlooked area now a days with the constant rush to teach everything. Reflection is the core of good teaching. Becoming transparent with the intent of bettering oneself and growing is really what good teaching is all about. We are all students of learning.
